1971 - 2026 | Celebrating 55 years of naval architecture and yacht engineering
In 2026, Diana Yacht Design marks its 55th anniversary. Since its foundation in 1971, the Dutch studio has contributed to the naval architecture, design and engineering of custom yachts, working alongside owners, designers, shipyards and project teams.
Founded by three Dutch engineers; Joost Beekman, Cor van der Wiel and Kees Kolff, DIANA began at a time when yacht design and engineering relied on hand-drawn plans and calculations. Over the following decades, the studio developed alongside the superyacht industry, as yachts became larger, more technically complex and subject to increasingly demanding requirements.
From drawing boards to 3D engineering
The way yachts are developed has changed considerably since 1971. Hand-drawn construction plans have given way to digital design tools, detailed 3D construction models and increasingly integrated engineering processes.
Today, naval architecture and yacht engineering are closely connected with decisions about hull form, stability, performance, structural design, onboard systems and construction methods. These considerations often need to be addressed early in a project to ensure that design ambitions can be translated into a technically sound and buildable yacht.
Throughout this development, DIANA has maintained its independent position, providing naval architecture, yacht engineering, design and construction support across different types of custom yacht projects.
Experience built through collaboration
Over 55 years, Diana Yacht Design has been involved in the development of a wide range of yachts, from early projects to today’s larger and more complex custom builds. Each project brings together different disciplines, requiring close cooperation between naval architects, engineers, designers, shipyards and specialist suppliers.
This collaborative approach has remained an important part of DIANA’s work. By combining technical expertise with an understanding of the construction process, the studio supports project teams from the early design stages through engineering and construction.
With more than 95 yachts delivered, DIANA’s history reflects not only the development of the yachts themselves, but also the people and partnerships involved in bringing them to life.

This anniversary is an opportunity to look back at the projects, technical developments and people who have shaped Diana Yacht Design since 1971. While the tools and requirements of yacht development have changed, the studio continues to work as an independent naval architecture and engineering partner, bringing experience and technical knowledge to each new project.
